TNN's New Product Development for Potato Growers

POTATO CROPS

NEW TNN PRODUCT FOR THE GROWING OF POTATOES
and expected
REDUCTION OF VERTICILLIUM WILT & POTATO SCAB
 

Experimentation has been undertaken overseas since 1998 to study the effects of various
organic preparations on the reduction of plant pathogens in the soil that cause damage such as
Potato Scab and Verticillium Wilt in potato crops.

The results obtained over a wide range of properly conducted trials and experiments
incorporating Ammonium Lignosulphonate organic preparations in the years 1998, 1999,
2000 and 2001 were very exciting. In all cases where Ammonium Lignosulphonate was the
principal organic ingredient, beneficial soil micro-organism populations increased in 14 days
from 300 million to 100 billion bacteria/g soil, and plant pathogen populations dramatically
decreased. Crops treated, averaged results where Potato Scab was reduced by up to 84%,
Verticillium Wilt decreased by up to 50%.

Ammonium Lignosulphonate is a by-product of the pulp and paper industry. It contains a
high nitrogen and carbon content, and has the potential to be used as organic matter in the
soil. The addition of organic materials to soil invariably alters the micro-biology. The microorganisms
that can utilise the energy of the incorporated organic material have an increase in
population. Under ideal conditions the micro-organisms that grow are either directly
beneficial to plant growth or are indirectly beneficial, in that they displace detrimental
organisms such as plant pathogens.

The way to develop a cost effective preparation and method to utilise the properties of
Ammonium Lignosulphonate for the benefit of the potato industry in particular has been very
elusive to date. Research and development conducted by TNN at Stanhope, Victoria, has
resulted in a potato seed dressing and soil inoculant that incorporates Ammonium
Lignosulphonate as a major component. .

TNN recommend that the product be applied by way of a first and second stage. The first
stage application of the diluted product to the soil during final preparation for planting, and a
second stage single application of the concentrate liquid applied to the seed prior to or during
the actual planting operation. The potato grower may however elect to carry out only a single
application, that being stage two only.

APPLICATION RATES:

FIRST STAGE: 4 litres of concentrate with water per Ha into the soil during preparation 3 to
4 weeks prior to planting if possible.

SECOND STAGE: Inoculate potato seed either just prior to or during planting with
undiluted concentrate.

OPTIONAL APPLICATION: TNN recommend inclusion of the First Stage for soil
preparation. Growers may elect to dispense with this First Stage and proceed directly to the
Second Stage depending on local climate conditions at the time.

Can we buy this product from you with a receipt how we need to use it?

Frank,
This formulation is utilized by dipping the potatoes into before planting. It helps to control scab and prevent other pathogenic diseases. This product can be obtained from the TNN head office, along with further information.
It would be advisable to check out your import requirementswith your local authorities.

Where on the internet can I read about the trials - who conducted them , where, what the controls were and the results?
